Player of the week honors went to Nick Merkley of the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets.

Merkley was a big part of the Rockets winning all three of their games on the week, posting four goals and six points.

His week included the first multi-goal game of his young career, as he scored two goals in a 6-3 win against the Everett Silvertips. Merkley’s Rockets then played back-to-back games against the Portland Winterhawks on the weekend. Merkley scored two more goals in the first game – a 6-2 win – and added two assists in Saturday’s 6-3 victory.

A native of Calgary, Merkley was the ninth overall pick out of the bantam draft in 2012 and ranks third among AHL rookies with eight points in his first six games.

Honorable mentions went to Scott Laughton of the OHL’s Oshawa Generals and Emile Poirier of the QMJHL’s Gatineau Olympiques.

Goalie of the week honors went to Ty Edmonds of the Prince George Cougars for posting a 2-1-0-0 record with two shutouts.

The 17-year-old native of Winnipeg started off the week by posting his first career WHL shutout in a 2-0 win over the Victoria Royals, turning aside all 31 shots. He followed that up with a 23-save performance in a 1-0 loss to the same Royals team. Edmonds’ week was capped off by a second shutout, this time a 27-save effort against the Kamloops Blazers in a 3-0 win.

Edmonds was a ninth round pick in the bantam draft in 2011 and is tied in third with a 1.68 GAA and .939 SP through seven games. His Cougars stand at 4-4-0-0 overall and sit second in their division behind the Kelowna Rockets.

Honorable mentions went to Philippe Cadorette of the QMJHL’s Baie-Comeau Drakkar and Brandon Halverson of the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
