Avalanche look to leave Western Conference basement

Colorado (28-30-1) at Carolina (30-25-5) 3:00 p.m. EST

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- If the Colorado Avalanche

want to move out of the Western Conference cellar, they'll have

to improve their play on the road.

The Avalanche will continue their season-long six-game road trip

when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.

Colorado currently sits one point behind the St. Louis Blues

(25-26-8) in last place in the West due mainly to a 11-16-1

record on the road. But the Avalanche started their marathon

road trip in fine fashion, securing a 4-1 win over the

Washington Capitals on Friday.

Ryan Smyth recorded a goal and two assists and Andrew Raycroft

made 28 saves, helping to end the 10-game point streak of

superstar Alex Ovechkin.

The Hurricanes have won two straight games by a combined 10-3.

Eric Staal has three goals over the last two games and Joe Corvo

sparked a 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday with a

pair of third-period goals.

Carolina owns a 15-13-1 record at home and snapped a three-game

losing streak in Raleigh with the win over the Lightning.
