
PEORIA, Ill. - Bryan Helmer broke the American Hockey League record for career points by a defenceman after scoring twice and adding an assist in the Oklahoma City Barons' 7-2 win over the Peoria Rivermen on Thursday.
Helmer has 520 points (122 goals, 398 assists) in 986 regular-season AHL games, eclipsing John Slaney's old mark of 519.
A native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., the 38-year-old Helmer has also played for Hershey, Albany, Worcester, Manitoba, Springfield, Grand Rapids and San Antonio over his 18-year AHL career.
He captained the Bears to back-to-back Calder Cup championships in 2009 and 2010, and also won the AHL championship with Albany in 1995.
