Chalk this up as something you don’t see every day – a junior player running into a referee from behind and sending him sprawling into the boards.
Satuday night in the BCHL, in a game between the Chilliwack Chiefs and Surrey Eagles, Eagles defenseman Latrell Charleson was chasing down a loose puck near the end of the game. As the linesman, Troy Paterson, waves off the potential icing, Charleson shoved referee Kirk Wood into the boards from behind.
Charleson was handed a game misconduct as the final whistle sounded. There has been no discipline handed down for the incident yet, and there’s uncertainty whether or not Charleson will face a suspension. The 19-year-old Charleson took to Twitter Sunday night to address the issue, stating that he and the referee had spoken about the incident and that he has apologized.
