Blake Wheeler scores shootout goal, dekes Oilers goalie Viktor Fasth out of game with an injury

Jets right winger Blake Wheeler is one of Winnipeg's top point-producers this season. And against the Oilers Monday night, he produced not only a shootout goal, but an injury to Edmonton goalie Viktor Fasth.

The teams remained tied after overtime in Winnipeg when Wheeler skated in on Fasth for the home side's first shootout shot. The 28-year-old stickhandles a number of times, and Fasth lunged out to his right in a failed attempt to stop the puck, injuring himself in the process:

Fasth was forced to leave the shootout and was replaced for the Jets' final two shots by backup Richard Bachman, but Wheeler's marker turned out to be the sole goal of the skills competition and the Jets won the game 5-4. The Oilers announced after the game Fasth had hurt his knee, although they offered no indication of the injury's severity or a potential return date:

In a year where virtually everything that could go wrong for the Oilers has gone wrong, it makes a twisted, cruel sense the organization could lose a player in the manner Fasth did. The 32-year-old is slated to be an unrestricted free agent this summer, and if this is the end of his season, his numbers (including a 3.41 goals-against average and .888 save percentage), he'll have to take a significant pay cut from the $3.4 million he made this year.
