Toronto to get All-Star Game and outdoor game in 2017: Source

The Toronto Maple Leafs will celebrate their 100th anniversary - and their 50th without a Stanley Cup - with an outdoor game and the All-Star Game, according to a source. Next year's Winter Classic will be at Fenway Park with a game between the Bruins and Montreal.

COLUMBUS - The Toronto Maple Leafs will celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2017 with the All-Star Game and an outdoor game, a source with close ties to NHL ownership told thn.com.

And it looks as though the Winter Classic for 2016 will be held in Boston at Gillette Stadium with a game against the Montreal Canadiens. And, of course, the World Cup is scheduled for Toronto in 2016 with eight teams, including an all-star team made up of smaller hockey countries and a team of 23-and-under North Americans.

The outdoor game involving the Leafs will apparently be held at Rogers Centre with the roof open and not at the outdoor BMO Field, the source said.

Leafs president Brendan Shanahan touched on the Leafs plans for their centennial season after the Board of Governors meeting in Columbus on Saturday.

“We’re still talking about it,” Shanahan said. “I actually spoke today with Montreal today about their experience going through the same thing a few years ago. I don’t know if it’s a great idea to do everything (All-Star Game, outdoor game, NHL draft). I think we’ll talk about it a little bit more before we start going through the press. But needless to say, we have very big expectations of what it should be like and how it should be and whether we want to do everything in one year or roll it out over a couple of years, we’ll see.”
