Bobby Lu perfect in Panthers debut

Roberto Luongo couldn't have scripted his return any better, blanking the Buffalo the Sabres 2-0 in the first game back of his second go-around with the Florida Panthers.

We can hardly wait to see what Roberto Luongo posts on his Twitter account @strombone1 after his spotless return to the Sunshine State.

A day earlier, he was playfully poking fun at the whitewashing of his former team, as the Vancouver Canucks were whipped 6-1 by the Dallas Stars in their first game without Luongo after dealing him to the Florida Panthers at the trade deadline.

First there came this harmless dig…

Followed by this…

And finished off with this…

We can forgive Luongo if he was humorously indulging in a touch of schadenfreude, watching his ex-team get shelled in its first game without him. And after Luongo shut out the Buffalo Sabres 2-0 Friday night in Florida, let's hope he pats himself on the back in the form of a few more witty tweets following his perfect performance.

Luongo, who last played for Florida April 18, 2006, against the Atlanta Thrashers, stopped all 25 shots he faced in his first game back with Cats. It was also his first NHL game in almost a month. Luongo hadn't played since losing to the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 Feb. 8 prior to the league shutting down for the Olympics. He got in one start at the Sochi Games, shutting out Austria 6-0, but hadn't been allowed back in net for the Canucks once the NHL returned to action more than a week ago.

The shutout was Luongo's 66th of his career, tying him with Patrick Roy for 14th on the all-time list.

It was also Florida's first shutout in almost two years. The last Panthers goalie to have a shutout was Jose Theodore, who blanked the New Jersey Devils 3-0 April 21, 2012 in Game 5 of the first round of the playoffs. He also had the Panthers' last regular season goose egg, which was March 11, 2012, in a 2-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.
