The Boston College Eagles host the Wisconsin Badgers tonight in a showdown of two top NCAA hockey teams. It's also Jerry York Night, where the Eagles will honor their legendary bench boss, who is in his 20th season with the school. With 936 career wins and counting, York is once again in charge of a powerhouse group of student-athletes and he's clearly humbled by the attention the institution is giving him.
"Part of the fun of coaching is being part of a team," he told me last night. "We'll quickly go through the introductions and then get to Eagles vs. Badgers."
Given that York's freshman class this season includes top draft-eligible goalie Thatcher Demko as well as NHL picks such as Ian McCoshen, Steven Santini and Ryan Fitzgerald, it's not out of the realm of possibility that the icon will hit 1,000 wins in his career. And with Calgary Flames pick Johnny Gaudreau gunning for another shot at the Hobey Baker and Florida Panthers first-rounder Michael Matheson patrolling the blueline again, York certainly has the chance to earn his fifth national championship banner at Boston College, too.
