BOSTON - The Boston Bruins placed Marc Savard on long-term injured reserve with a broken left foot Wednesday and expect the star centre to miss 4-6 weeks.

They also recalled forward Trent Whitfield from Providence of the American Hockey League on an emergency basis. The Bruins did not say when or how Savard, their leading scorer the past three seasons, suffered the injury.

The 32-year-old has four goals and three assists in seven games this year and joins rugged forward Milan Lucic on the sidelines.

Lucic underwent surgery to repair his broken right index finger over the weekend.

Whitfield, 32, has three goals and five assists with Providence this season. He has appeared in 177 NHL games with the Capitals, Rangers and Blues, collecting 11 goals and 17 assists.
