Buffalo Sabres forward Jiri Novotny out with upper body injury

He was hurt late in the second period Sunday and did not return. The Sabres would not be more specific about his injury. Novotny is in his first full season with the Sabres, and has five goals and nine points in 24 games.

Novotny joins a growing list of sidelined Sabres - forwards Jochen Hecht (inner ear) and Derek Roy (broken hand), and defencemen Toni Lydman (neck strain) and Henrik Tallinder (broken forearm).

Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said Tuesday he anticipates Hecht and Lydman returning when Buffalo hosts the Rangers on Friday. Hecht has missed three games and Lydman has not dressed since he was hurt against Florida on Nov. 10.
