Buffalo Sabres place forward Paul Gaustad on IR; demote D Weber

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Buffalo Sabres placed forward Paul Gaustad on injured reserve and assigned defenceman Mike Weber to the minors to set their 23-player regular-season roster on Wednesday.

Gaustad is expected to miss the first month of the season after surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb last week. Weber, demoted to AHL Portland, Maine, proved to be the odd-man out and was the final player cut as the Sabres were carrying eight defencemen.

Buffalo's 2006 second-round draft pick, Weber had three assists in 16 games in his NHL debut with the Sabres last season. He appeared in five pre-season games last month, registering no points and 31 penalty minutes.

The Sabres open the regular season against Montreal on Friday.
