Calling on Shanny

Scoring has once again dropped to 5.6 goals a game and is getting closer to pre-lockout numbers.

How can this happen with all the changes that have been made, people ask?

Of course, the first thing that is mentioned is the need for bigger nets, which is unbelievable to me. Has nobody in the hockey world noticed that goaltender’s chest protectors are still capable of stopping an oncoming truck without harm?

The pads are skinnier, yet still long enough to cover post to post while in the butterfly, showing no five-hole.

I believe Brendan Shanahan made a point about how a cop can walk down the street with a bulletproof vest on and look normal, and yet the NHL’s goalies have to look like Michelin men.

With advancing technology, pads can lay flat in the butterfly, standing straight up with no exposure to the leg; unlike they did in the 80’s and early 90’s.

There has to be a way to make upper body protection smaller without compromising the player’s wellbeing.

If the league wants scoring to increase for any length of time it has to look at the upper body protection and the lengths of the pads.

In my opinion, to increase the size of the nets is a ridiculous idea.

It’s time the league listens to what Shanny has to say…again.
