Campbell's Cuts: Off-ice experience

BUFFALO - Here's something you might not have known about the New York Rangers coaching staff. It's the only one of the 30 in the NHL that doesn't have a single guy who played in the NHL on it.

In fact, none of Tom Renney, Perry Pearn, Mike Pelino or Benoit Allaire even played pro hockey at any level.

The best of the players is undoubtedly Allaire, the Rangers goaltending coach who played in two Memorial Cup tournaments.

Pelino played five years at the University of Toronto, scoring the game-winning goal in the national championship game for the Mike Keenan coached U of T Blues in 1984.

Renney, who never played any higher than junior hockey, has been a career coach, winning a Memorial Cup with the Kamloops Blazers before coaching the Canadian national team and the Vancouver Canucks.

“I've never found it to be an issue,” Renney said. “No team I've ever had has held that against me.”

BON APPETITE: Jaromir Jagr of the Rangers had this to say when a reporter asked him Friday morning whether the Rangers would try something different, perhaps eat a different pre-game meal, to change their luck in Buffalo.

Going into the game, the Rangers had lost both regular-season games and the first two playoff games at HSBC Arena.

“Yeah, I'm going to eat pasta today,” Jagr said. “Usually I eat mashed potatoes.”

CLOSE SHAVES: Another night, another one-goal game.

Friday night's 2-1 overtime victory by the Buffalo Sabres over the New York Rangers in Game 5 of their second-round series was the 38th of this year's playoffs so far in 61 games, putting this year's playoffs on pace to shatter last year's record of 46 one-goal games.

Going into Saturday's games, 62.3 per cent of all playoff games this season had been decided by one goal, as opposed to 55.4 per cent through the entire playoffs last season.
