Canada's Dana Tyrell sidelined for world junior championships with knee injury

ORANGEVILLE, Ont. - A knee injury has ended Dana Tyrell's world junior hockey tournament before it had even begun.

Hockey Canada announced Sunday that the Prince George Cougars forward would be unable to play in the world tournament in Ottawa after injuring his knee in Friday's 4-2 exhibition win over Sweden in Toronto.

Vancouver Giants forward Evander Kane has been added to the Canadian junior team roster in his place.

The 19-year-old Tyrell, who's the Cougars' leading scorer and team captain, was skating on a line with John Tavares on Friday night. Tyrell didn't return to play in the third period however. The Airdrie, Alta., native was scheduled to return home Sunday.

Tyrell has played for Canada once, at the 2007 Canada-Russia Super Series. Last year, he suffered a knee strain that hampered him at the national junior team's final selection camp and he was released.

The 17-year-old Kane played for Canada's under-18 team that won gold at the 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka in August. The Vancouver native was scheduled to join the team Sunday in Brampton, Ont., where the Canadians were facing Finland in another exhibition game.

Canada opens the world junior tournament Dec. 26 against the Czech Republic.

Canada has won gold at the last four world junior hockey championships and has finished on the podium in the last 10 tournaments.
