Canadian Women's Olympic Team to be Honored at 2022 Heritage Classic
The Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres won't even be the best hockey teams at their own game on Sunday.
The NHL announced on Wednesday that the 2022 Canadian women's national team that captured Olympic gold in Beijing will be honored during the Heritage Classic in Hamilton, Ontario, with members of that world champion squad making an appearance at the game.
The Canadian Women's Team defeated the United States in a heated gold medal game on February 16th by a score of 3-2, with superstar Marie-Philip Poulin scoring her fourth career "Golden Goal" to propel her country to victory. This iteration of Team Canada might go down as one of the best in the nation's history. And in front of a sold-out Tim Hortons Field this Sunday, they will be honored as such.
The festivities will also include performances from a number of marquee musical acts.
Grammy Award-winning singer and Brampton, Ontario native Alessia Cara will perform during the first intermission, with viral music sensation Willow opening the event on the "Tik Tok Tailgate Stage" with a live-streamed performance at 2:45 PM EST.
The game itself will begin at 4 PM EST, with a player arrival ceremony before country music star Lindsay Eli performs the Canadian and American national anthems, accompanied by Toronto Sign Language interpreters Azad Najfi and Matt Tel.
It's clear that the NHL has pulled out all the stops to ensure that the 2022 Heritage Classic is a can't-miss event. And with the world champions on hand, along with some heavy-hitting musical talent, it sure it shaping up that way.
