Chris Chelios to join June 26 motorcycle ride honouring Bob Probert

WINDSOR, Ont. - A motorcycle ride in memory of Bob Probert will be led by a former teammate of the late NHL tough guy.

Retired Detroit Red Wings defenceman Chris Chelios has agreed to get in the saddle as "road captain" for the fundraising ride this summer.

The inaugural Bob Probert Memorial Ride will begin at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena, cross the border into Windsor, Ont., and continue into southwestern Ontario.

Funds raised by the June 26 ride will support the angioplasty program at Hotel-Dieu Grace hospital in Windsor, which was Probert's hometown.

Probert played for the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks.

He died last summer after suffering a heart attack while boating on Lake St. Clair with his family.

His widow Dani Probert says she took her eldest daughter on a tour of the angioplasty unit, and knew it was the right cause to support.

"With Bob passing away with a heart attack, it was a no-brainer," she said.

Dani Probert said her husband loved riding and collecting motorcycles.

"My daughter and I are talking about getting our licences and hoping to ride Bob's bikes one day," she said.
