This is a bit of a trick question, because Alexander Steen is scheduled to become the St. Louis Blues' GM next summer. But Joe Thornton and Thomas Vanek recently became hockey operations advisors for the San Jose Sharks. Jason Spezza is an assistant GM in Pittsburgh. Vincent Lecavalier is a special advisor to hockey operations in Montreal. Jarome Iginla is a special advisor to the GM in Calgary. Dave Poulin is a senior VP of hockey operations in Ottawa.
There are really too many to name all of them, but whether it's before Steen gets into his new role or afterward, which former player will be next to get the coveted GM job in the NHL? (Olympic and world champion Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser, who's an assistant GM in Toronto, also comes to mind, although she's a doctor as well. If anybody can do both jobs at the same time, maybe it's Wickenheiser.)
