Detroit routs Farjestad 6-2 in pre-season game

KARLSTAD, Sweden - Henrik Zetterberg had a goal and an assist as the Detroit Red Wings capped the pre-season with a 6-2 win over Swedish club Farjestad on Wednesday.

The Wings will open the regular season with a pair of games against the St. Louis Blues on Friday and Saturday in Stockholm.

Zetterberg, who sat out the first eight pre-season games in North America with a sore groin, received the biggest ovation from the record crowd of 8,398 before the game.

"It was cool," said Zetterberg, who added that his groin felt OK. "It was the first time the fans have cheered me so much in this arena. To come here and play in Sweden is fun, and it's extra fun to face a Swedish team."

The Swede responded with a dazzling shot into the top corner at 15:08 in the opening period that made it 2-0. Fellow Swede Niklas Kronwall set up the goal for Zetterberg.

Kronwall added a goal and two assists for the Wings while Jason Williams, Valteri Filppula, Brian Rafalski and Todd Bertuzzi also scored.

Detroit outshot Farjestad 30-24.

The game was played on the larger European ice surface. The season-openers will be played on an NHL-sized rink.

Farjestad, which has been on ice since August, won the Swedish championship last year and is currently third in the 12-team Elite League.
