Essential Water Cooler

Are you a fan of the American Olympic team? Are you also getting kinda nervous right now? Injuries seem to be piling up for the Stars and Stripes, with St. Louis captain David Backes the latest to get dinged, as the power forward was injured in a collision with Ottawa's Colin Greening in what looked like a possible concussion. With Jonathan Quick already on the shelf, that's two key players right there and we haven't even gotten to New Year's yet. But at the same time, is it too early to worry?

Primetime Play

Jonathan Bernier took the loss for Toronto as the Leafs fell 3-1 to the Penguins, but he got the better of Jayson Megna on this big run-in.

Men of the Night

Evander Kane, Winnipeg: Returning from a lower-body injury, Kane got back on track right away for the Jets, setting up Mark Scheifele for a nice goal and lasering in one of his own as Winnipeg stopped Columbus 3-2.

Paul Stastny, Colorado: The Avs piled it on against Dallas, winning 6-2 and getting a big contribution from Stastny. The veteran pulled in two goals and added two assists.

Bobby Ryan, Ottawa: That deal with Anaheim is looking sweet. Ryan was a force once again, popping in a goal and two points as the Sens shocked St. Louis in overtime.

Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh: The defense in front of him was practically an AHL lineup due to injuries, meaning Fleury had to stand tall against Toronto. He did, stopping 25 of 26 for yet another win.

Better Luck Next Time

The Stars got ventilated last night and rookie Alex Chiasson was a frequent witness to the action, with a minus-4 rating. Not only that, but the big man wasn't credited with a single hit, yet did find time to get a cross-checking penalty in the third period.
