Essential Water Cooler

Nothing in Alex Steen's resume would indicate he was capable of challenging for the NHL scoring crown, but here we are in mid-December and the St. Louis Blues center is still top-10, tied with Alex Ovechkin. And while this scoring glut may have been unforeseen, Steen has always been a reliable two-way player, which begs the question: Did Toronto give up on him too early? The Leafs, who lost to Steen's Blues 6-3 last night, traded him away in 2008-09 after just three and a half seasons, along with Carlo Colaiacovo for Lee Stempniak. Did the Leafs jump the gun?

Primetime Play

Paul Gaustad is starting to bring the offense in Nashville and this sweet goal helped the Preds douse Dallas 3-1.

Men of the Night

Rob Klinkhammer, Phoenix: There's a rule in hockey writing: When you can mention Rob Klinkhammer, you mention Rob Klinkhammer. Rob Klinkhammer had two goals and a helper as Phoenix beat up the Islanders 6-3. Klinkhammer.

Matt Duchene, Colorado: 'Dutchy' is back in the danger zone, snapping in two goals, an assist and the eventual shootout winner as the Avs downed the Jets 4-3.

Karri Ramo, Calgary: The Flames netminder made 29 saves, none more crucial than the repelling of Jeff Skinner's penalty shot late in the third. Calgary beat Carolina 2-1 in overtime.

Craig Anderson, Ottawa: He's had a rough season, but Anderson was up to the task last night, rejecting 40 Buffalo attempts in a 2-1 Sens win.

Joe Pavelski, San Jose: The Sharks snapped a four-game losing streak by getting past the Wild 3-1 and Pavelski led the charge with two goals.

Better Luck Next Time

Rick Nash no doubt wanted to put on a good show at MSG with his old mates from Columbus visiting for the first time since the big trade, but he ended up watching from a distance. Nash was a minus-2 in the Rangers' 4-2 loss and had no shots on net.
