Essential Water Cooler

Calgary? Really? The Flames knocked off the Kings with a TJ Bodie power play goal in the final half-minute of regulation Monday night. They've now got points in six of their eight games. The next big decision for the franchise is whether or not to keep Sean Monahan, who scored yet another goal last night. He now has six goals and nine points in eight games. Should the Flames keep Monahan past the nine-game mark (which would burn a year off his entry level deal, but not push him closer to free agency), or send him back to junior?

Primetime Play

Antti Niemi has been spectacular for the Sharks the past few years and was considered for the Vezina last season. Monday night he stared down Jimmy Howard in a goalie duel that wasn't decided until the shootout. The Sharks won both the game and the shootout 1-0 - and this final save by Niemi was the dagger.

Men of the Night

Jimmy Howard: Deserves a nod even though his team lost. Howard felt the burn of earning a shutout, but still managing to lose 1-0 in a shootout. He turned aside 22 in the effort.

Antti Niemi: And if Howard gets a nod, so does Niemi, who faced one more shot in regulation and overtime than Howard and remained perfect through the shootout competition.

J-S Giguere: Giguere continued what was a great night for goalies. He recorded a 21-save shutout in his third appearance this season and lifted the Avs to a narrow 1-0 win over Pittsburgh. The Avalanche keep rolling.

Jiri Hudler: Hudler is the only player in the NHL left who has scored at least one point in all of his eight games. He added two assists to his totals last night, one of which came on the game-winning goal.

Hudler now has 11 points in eight games to start the season.

Better Luck Next Time

Yesterday we were rough on rookie Jack Campbell and today we'll be rough on rookie Nathan MacKinnon. The Cole Harbour native was up against fellow Cole Harbour native Sidney Crosby for the first time last night. And though Colorado won the game, Crosby won the one-on-one with this deke that nearly put MacKinnon on his butt. He won't fall for that again.
