Essential Water Cooler

In what could be one of the more shocking (yet half-expected) developments of the still-young season, the New Jersey Devils are creeping up the standings. After shutting down the Buffalo Sabres all game, Steve Bernier decided enough was enough, and ripped a shot past Ryan Miller in overtime to end a 0-0 tie that had been going on for nearly 65 minutes. The win put the Devils at 27 points, just one point out of a playoff berth in the Metropolitan Division.

Primetime Play

As he seems to do at least one a season, Rangers forward Rick Nash came out from behind the net, powered through the opposing defense, and punched one into the net while falling to the ground to tie the game at one in the first period of Saturday’s game.

Men of the Night

1. The Rangers’ Chris Kreider potted a hat trick and led his team to a 5-2 victory over the Canucks and their former coach John Tortorella.

2. Evgeni Malkin continues to creep up on Sidney Crosby for the league lead in points, as he potted a goal and three assists in the Penguins win over the Panthers.

3. With Marty Brodeur on the bench for another off-night, Cory Schneider stood tall, stopping all 15 shots he faced for his third shutout of the season.

4. In a battle of Eastern Canada, Max Pacioretty was the one who shined the brightest, scoring two goals and adding an assist as his Canadiens defeated Toronto 4-2.

Better Luck Next Time

Sorry Carey Price, when someone like James van Riemsdyk shows off that kind of shooting ability, the best thing to do is simply close your eyes and hope it hits you.
