The Hockey News

Missed last night's action? We've got you covered in our morning recap.

Essential Water Cooler

In the Oilers-Habs game, Luke Gadzic and Travis Moen attempted to go at it, with gloves and helmets discarded and malice in their hearts. But as they circled, the officials broke up the proceedings and gave the pair two-minute minors for unsportsmanlike conduct (they did doff their helmets after all). Is this the beginning of an actual crackdown on fighting, or was the fact this skirmish was pre-determined by a chirp session involving Gadzic and the much smaller Brendan Gallagher the reason the zebras didn't want to stand idly by?

Primetime Play

They don't get much prettier than this. Nicklas Backstrom of the Capitals shows off his elite playmaking skills as Washington downed Winnipeg 5-4 in a shootout:

Men of the Night

Mike Ribeiro, Phoenix: Added to the Dogs lineup for his flashy offensive skills, Ribeiro delivered in a 4-2 win over Calgary with two goals.

Phil Kessel, Toronto: The Leafs' sniper netted a hat trick against the rolling Ducks, who were put on their backsides by the Blue and White 4-2 thanks to Kessel and James van Riemsdyk's setups.

James Wisniewski, Columbus: The Blue Jackets are finding their footing and put the boots to New Jersey 4-1 as 'The Wiz' led proceedings with a goal and two helpers.

Alex Ovechkin, Washington: Just another night at the office, dismantling the Jets as usual for Ovie. He took over the NHL goal-scoring lead with two tallies on the evening.

Josh Harding, Minnesota: He may not have been busy, but Harding stopped all 16 shots against in a 2-0 blanking of Nashville.

Better Luck Next Time

Montreal's Lars Eller gave Edmonton all the bulletin board material necessary when he said the Oilers played like a junior team prior to last night's game. Well wouldn't you know it, the Oilers ended up beating Montreal 4-3 and after, Edmonton coach Dallas Eakins said the hockey gods were on their side thanks to Eller.

Cole Schwindt Is Now One To Watch in Calgary

Cole Schwindt might have been an afterthought in the Matthew Tkachuk trade. But his value to the Calgary Flames could be extremely important moving forward.
