Eric Staal, Jonathan Quick and Michael Grabner collect NHL player weekly honours

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Hurricanes centre Eric Staal was named the NHL's first star of the week Tuesday after putting up four points in a pair of victories during an abbreviated week.

The captain of Team Staal at last weekend's 2011 NHL all-star festivities helped Carolina close within a point of a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

Staal had one assist in a 6-4 victory over Toronto, two goals and one assist in a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders, and then closed the week with a pair of third-period goals in Team Staal's 11-10 loss to Team Lidstrom at the all-star game.

Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick registered a pair of victories heading into the all-star break, helping the Kings gain momentum in a tight race for playoff berths in the Western Conference.

Quick made 34 saves in a 2-0 victory over Boston, then turned aside 22 of 24 shots through overtime and stopped all four shootout attempts in a 3-2 win over San Jose.

New York Islanders right-winger Michael Grabner picked up third star honours after recording a goal and assist in a 4-2 loss to Carolina.

Grabner, one of 12 rookies in the SuperSkills during all-star weekend, competed in the fastest skater competition and topped Edmonton Oilers rookie Taylor Hall in the finale to win the crown.
