Thursday morning hadn't even ended yet and it was already a good day for the Ottawa Senators. There was, of course, the somewhat surprising

signing of Bobby Ryan to a seven-year, $50.75 million contract that locks up the goal scorer well before he would have become eligible for UFA status next summer. And then there was the much less surprising announcement that 2012 Norris winning defenseman Erik Karlsson would be the next captain of the franchise. He'll be the ninth 'C'-bearer in team history.

The captaincy in Ottawa became available after Jason Spezza was dealt to Dallas in the summer. Karlsson, the exciting, award-winning blueliner, is no doubt the face of the franchise now and a leader on the team in many facets. Ryan will make the most money against the cap in the team when his extension kicks in after next season, but would his quieter personality have been a better fit for the 'C'? It's hard to argue against Karlsson. At 24 years old, Karlsson is about five years younger than the average age of an NHL captain today. Do you think he's the

right pick to captain the Senators?
