Ex-NHL enforcer sues Delta, B.C., nightclub after assault that left him in a coma

Thomas Lewis, the lawyer for 31-year-old Garrett Burnett, claims in a writ filed in B.C. Supreme Court that two men started verbally abusing him and a friend at Cheers Nightclub last December.

The document says the two doormen watched the fracas but did nothing to stop it - and when the men became violent, the bouncers tossed all the patrons outside, where Burnett was allegedly hit on the head with a bar stool.

The statement says he suffered injuries that left him in a coma and on life support for 20 days.

Burnett, who spent four months in hospital, is seeking damages for negligence and breach of duty.

The 31-year-old hockey tough guy played most of his career in the minors but spent half a season in the NHL with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
