Face-palm giveaway leads to Kings OT win over Vancouver

The Canucks are in a free-fall and giving away victories should not be an option right now. But Vancouver did just that against Los Angeles, throwing the puck away to Jeff Carter during 3-on-3 play. The result was obvious.

The Vancouver Canucks weren't expected to be a force this season – we predicted them to finish sixth in the Pacific in our Yearbook – so technically they are overachieving by holding down fourth right now.

But it sure doesn't feel like a team with much hope and last night's result against Los Angeles was a pretty good indicator of why. After getting a stellar performance from goalie Jacob Markstrom through 60 minutes, Vancouver took the Kings into overtime.

That's when this horror show occurred:

Now, do you blame Alex Edler for throwing the puck out there for Jeff Carter to steal, or Radim Vrbata for not being available for the outlet pass? Either way, the result was a Carter pass to Anze Kopitar for a gimme overtime winner.

Stunningly, the 9-9-8 Canucks have already lost seven games in overtime this season – that's almost as many games as they've won in regulation (eight). The team is 1-1 in shootouts and captain Henrik Sedin even floated the idea of waiting out overtime after last night's traumatic ending.

I mean, at this point it couldn't hurt…
