Fantasy Pool Look: Home-ice advantage

The Hockey News

The Hockey News

With 82 games on the schedule for 30 NHL teams, it is impossible for the schedule-maker to move all teams through the season with the same amount of home games at any given time. Combine that with the notable differences in a player’s performance at home versus away and you could use that information to your advantage.

For example, if a player has played a lot of games at home so far and is doing extremely well, but his numbers on the road drop off significantly, then he’s a candidate to trade away for a good return. Here are some examples.

Matt Cullen, Minnesota

Home: 11GP 4G 7A

Road: 8GP 0G 4A

The Wild play four of their next six at home, then seven of the following 10 on the road. Early December is a good time to move Cullen, while his numbers are artificially inflated.

Loui Eriksson, Dallas

Home: 11GP 7G 10A

Road: 8GP 2G 3A

Those home numbers are impressive, but the team plays nine of its next 14 games on the road. Eriksson is on a 95-point pace, but won’t get more than 75 or 80.

Claude Giroux, Philadelphia

Home: 13GP 8G 9A

Road: 9GP 4G 2A

The Flyers do not have a big road trip until the end of December. If Giroux’s home/road trend continues to that point, it will be the time to make a move in your rotisserie league.

Patrick Marleau, San Jose

Home: 11GP 7G 8A

Road: 8GP 1G 2A

The difference here is huge. The Sharks play seven of the next nine games on the road, so shop him immediately before his numbers fall back into line.

Alexander Semin, Washington

Home: 12GP 12G 7A

Road: 10GP 2G 5A

Semin is already a sell-high candidate and an injury risk, based on his history. After Wednesday, the Caps play six of eight at home, so the time to move him would be just after that. Semin leads the NHL in points at home.

Justin Williams, Los Angeles

Home: 9GP 6G 7A

Road: 11GP 3G 5A

The Kings play two of their next three on the road before a four-game homestand. If the trend continues and Williams produces well during that homestand, I would try to deal him before the Kings head to Detroit Dec. 13 to kick off a five-game road swing.

On Saturday, I’ll take a look at the Road Warriors.
