Flames' goalie Karlsson to miss six-to-eight weeks with MCL tear in right knee

CALGARY - Calgary Flames backup goaltender will miss six-to-eight weeks with a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

Karlsson injured the knee Sunday during the third period of Calgary's 5-1 loss in Vancouver. He was placed on injured reserve Monday with a suspected MCL sprain. A re-evaluation of the injury Wednesday revealed the ligament actually sustained a high-grade tear.

Karlsson had an 0-4-1 record this season, with a .895 save percentage and a 3.48 goals-against average.

The Flames recalled Leland Irving from the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League on Monday to back up Miikka Kiprusoff in Tuesday night's game against Carolina.

Irving is 15-7-0 with the Heat this year, including three shutouts.
