Flames sign defenceman Mark Giordano to five-year contact extension

CALGARY - The Calgary Flames have signed defenceman Mark Giordano to a five-year contract extension.

The six-foot, 203-pound defender from Toronto is in his fourth season with the Flames, who signed him as a free agent on July 6, 2004.

Giordano had career highs last season in games played (82), goals (11), assists (19) and points (30). He has three assists this season and is third in the NHL in blocked shots with 26.

His salary this season is US$1.075 million. Giordano was due to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Giordano has 20 goals and 48 assists for 68 points and 193 penalty minutes in 205 career games.
