Goal of the year race has new frontrunner from UK’s EIHL

You never know where the goal of the year might come from. Case in point, Chris Culligan, who plays in the United Kingdom for the EIHL’s Cardiff Devils, may take home the honor this season after he made a deke while falling down and then scored from his stomach with a defender on top of him.

Alex Ovechkin’s spinning, sliding, one-handed goal against Phoenix remains one of the best goals scored in recent history, but we’ll venture to guess that Chris Culligan’s goal in the EIHL is the greatest goal scored in league history.

Culligan, who plays for the Cardiff Devils, scored a goal that’s similar to Ovechkin’s famous tally but had the degree of difficulty increased ever so slightly. You see, Ovechkin was falling and sliding without a defenseman literally on top of him. Culligan, on the other hand, had a defender draped all over him throughout the entire goal:

Culligan, a native of Syndey, N.S., played five years in the QMJHL with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and another five seasons in the AUS for the University of New Brunswick. Since graduating from the CIS in 2013-14, Culligan has suited up for three AHL games with the Texas Stars, six ECHL contests with the Gwinnett Gladiators and is in his first season with the Devils.

It may be hard to believe, but the goal was only Culligan’s 11th of the season and just his second goal in the month of February. Not exactly the kind of superstar you’d expect a goal like this to come from.

Helping make the goal that much better is that the Devils went on to a 5-3 victory over the Coventry Blaze.
