GoPro takes you up close and personal for all-star weekend

If you want a different perspective on the All-Star Game’s Skills Competition, look no further than this GoPro video that puts you right in the action. GoPro and the NHL let you skate with Aaron Ekblad, handle the puck with Filip Forsberg, and see what Brian Elliott sees when he makes a glove stop on Patrice Bergeron.

If you missed All-Star weekend in Columbus, don’t worry. The NHL and GoPro have you covered.

Before the all-star weekend kicked off, the NHL and NHLPA brought their deal with the action camera back into the spotlight with a highlight video that showed some of the game’s premier stars messing around on the ice with the equipment. It gave hope for some new angles for game action, or at least Skills Competition action, during the weekend and GoPro delivered.

Though the video starts with a few establishing shots of the activities outside Nationwide Arena, it quickly shifts inside the building, where our first look is at a grizzled Brent Burns handling a puck in the pre-Skills Competition skate.

From there, it’s a look at Florida Panthers rookie Aaron Ekblad taking on Montreal Canadiens rookie Jiri Sekac in the fastest skater competition, and a net-perspective of Anaheim Ducks star Ryan Getzlaf and Edmonton Oilers young gun Ryan Nugent-Hopkins trying to make saucer passes into those frustrating mini-nets.

The highlights of the point-of-view camera’s use comes when Nashville Predators rookie Filip Forsberg deftly handles the puck through the obstacles and when Brian Elliott throws out the glove on Patrice Bergeron. It never hurts to get another look at Roberto Luongo’s brilliant glove save, either.

If this is how the NHL plans to use the cameras – for special events once every so often – it might actually add something. Overkill can set in with gimmicks such as this, so for now, this is a good first use of the cameras in game scenarios.
