Gordie Howe is expected to appear at a celebrity sports dinner Friday in Saskatoon, which will pay tribute to his life and career.

The legend who was born in Floral, Sask., will appear at the Kinsmen Sports Celebrity Dinner in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in what is being billed by the dinner as his last public appearance.

The 86-year-old Howe who suffers from dementia, had a rough 2014, which included a stroke that forced the former hockey star into a bed-ridden state and concerns swirled throughout the world that he may not be able to continue on.

But after a visit to Mexico for stem cell treatment last month, Howe made a drastic recovery and even managed to venture through a tough 12-hour trip to Saskatchewan from Texas for Friday's event. The trip was lengthened due to mechanical issues aboard one of the aircrafts he flew on with his son Murray.

"He fared fairly well, considering," son Mark Howe said Friday morning at the pre-event press conference, which was attended by Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Hull and his son Brett Hull.

The Hall of Famer had 801 goals, 1049 assists and 1850 points in 1767 career NHL games. He also played 419 games in the WHA where he earned an additional 508 points.
