SASKATOON - This doctor specializes in elbows.

The University of Saskatchewan plans to recognize National Hockey League legend Gordie Howe with an honorary degree at its graduation ceremonies next month.

Howe, regarded as one of the best ever to play the game, was born in Floral, Sask., and grew up in Saskatoon.

The Hall of Famer won four Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings in the 1950s and six Hart Trophies as the league's most valuable player.

He currently sits third on the list of all-time points leaders and second in career goals.

The university says it is also recognizing the 82-year-old for his philanthropic work, including his Howe Foundation, which raises money so that children can play the game.
