Gostisbehere has close call in Flyers win over Kings

The Philly blue liner took a Kyle Clifford skate to the face during the first period on Friday night, but managed to avoid serious injury.

Flyers defenceman Shayne Gostisbehere had a close call to begin his second NHL season.

The 23-year-old was trying to check Kyle Clifford off the puck when the L.A. Kings forward’s skate came up and clipped him in the face early in the first period of Friday night’s 4-2 Flyers win.

Gostisbehere was able to get repairs done on the Philly bench and remain in the game.

"I just looked up and something hit me," Gostisbehere told Dave Issac of the Courier-Post. "I checked real quick and realized I was leaking a bit. God was with me on that one. I’ll thank Him for that."

Gostisbehere, who was a Calder Trophy finalist last season, finished with an assist in 20:57 of ice time in the Philly win.

"I didn’t know what happened until I saw him and then I saw the replay," coach Dave Hakstol said. "When you do actually see the replay you realize how close that came to being pretty bad. He’s got a little scratch. He’s going to be OK and we’re lucky for that."

Gostisbehere and the Flyers return to action on Saturday night when they visit the Arizona Coyotes.
