Guaranteed contracts must go

Michael Plourde, Edmundston, N.B.

When I see guys like Sheldon Souray and Wade Redden playing in the American League due to cap issues it makes me cringe. The NHL seriously needs to implement a non-guaranteed clause during the next collective bargaining agreement.

However, since this would entice teams to offer long-term contracts with no plans to fully honor them, there would be a few conditions.

For instance, long-term contracts would only be available to UFA players and be guaranteed for half the duration or half plus one year for Three-, five- or seven- year contracts.

Furthermore the guaranteed clause would only be offered to contracts for seven years or less. If that would be the case right now, Redden would be a free agent at the end of this season and he could offer his services for less money to another NHL team.

As for guys like Ilya Kovalchuk, well, the Devils made their bed on this one so tough luck. Make him a healthy scratch for all we care.
