How the NHL can start free agent fever

Glen Cuthbert, Hamilton, Ont.

With the recent media hype surrounding the "Big 3" NBA free agents (LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade), I began to wonder: Could the same thing happen in the NHL?

It's not likely, but what if the NHL made it happen basically every year?

The answer is simple: don't allow contract extensions.

If every player was required to go to unrestricted free agency when their contracts expired, it would make for some very interesting summers.

Player that wanted to could, of course, re-sign with the team they played for the season before. However, they would also be able to entertain offers from the 29 other teams.

Can you imagine Rick Nash, Ilya Kovalchuk, Dany Heatley and Phil Kessel all as free agents the same year? It would make for one amazing summer.
