Islanders take on Maple Leafs, hope to end December slide

Toronto (14-14-6) at NY Islanders (10-21-3), 7:00 pm EST

UNIONDALE, New York (Ticker) -- The New York Islanders have had

a forgettable month.

The Islanders will attempt to pick up their first win of

December when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday.

Andy Hilbert ended the team's 133-minute, 10-second scoring

drought Tuesday as New York erased a two-goal deficit but still

suffered a 4-2 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers.

Sean Bergenheim netted a shorthanded goal for the Islanders, who

have posted an 0-9-1 record this month.

The Maple Leafs will try to bounce back from an 8-2 loss to the

Dallas Stars on Tuesday. Jason Blake ended a seven-goal run by

the Stars with 4 1/2 minutes left in the second period.

It was the second time in five days that Toronto had given up

eight goals. Despite those woeful defensive performances, the

Maple Leafs have won five of their last seven games.
