Jonathan Bernier’s struggles this season have been well documented - he has gone eight games without a win (0-7-1) this season.

In his last start, nearly two weeks ago, he let a Derek Stepan shot from center ice beat him between the legs.

On Saturday night, Bernier made his first start since Nov. 15 looking for his first win since an April 5 victory over the Ottawa Senators.

Leafs coach Mike Babcock called the start an excellent opportunity for Bernier to grab the starter’s role from the injured James Reimer.

“Huge, I'd say. I'd grab it if I was him," Babcock said per NHL.com. “You've got to outplay the other guy. It's the National Hockey League. Lots of goalies let in tough goals, but they don't do it at the wrong time. Other guys just can't find their way. You have to earn the right to feel good about yourself. He has been a good goalie in the past; grab hold and get running."

The 27-year-old certainly didn’t have the start he was looking for.

On the second shot of the game, Jason Chimera opened the scoring with his seventh of the season – one Bernier should’ve had.
