There was a scary scene during the Thursday night contest between the KHL’s Lokomotiv Yaroslavl and CSKA Moscow.

Early in the second period, Yaroslavl forward Vladislav Kartayev was breaking down the left wing boards on a 2-on-1 with teammate Yegor Korshkov, when he cut toward the net to take a shot and tripped over the body of Kirill Vorobyov. Kartayev lost his footing, crashed into the post back first and was left writhing in pain on the ice.

It’s around the 45-second mark of the video that you see just how brutal the injury was. Kartayev’s body wraps around the goalpost and he screams in pain, flipping his gloves off to grab at his injured back.

In 53 games this season, the 23-year-old has three goals and 10 points. This has been Kartayev’s first full season in the KHL, as he has split time between the Russian league’s minor league system and the big clubs.

Thankfully, Kartayev continued to move when he was on the stretcher, but his discomfort was extremely evident as he was taken off the ice. There have been no updates thus far on Kartayev’s health, but we hope for his speedy recovery and to see him back on the ice soon.
