According to his lawyer Craig Renetzky, Los Angeles Kings defenseman Slava Voynov appeared in court today to plead not guilty to his domestic violence charge.

The case will enter pretrial on Jan. 28, with a full jury trial taking place on March 2. However, there is the possibility Voynov and his legal team could reach a plea deal between now and the trial date.

The arraignment date of Dec. 29 was set back on Dec. 15, when an officer testified saying that Voynov punched, kicked, pushed, and choked his wife during an incident on Oct. 20. During his Dec. 15 court date, Voynov's legal team asked for the charge to be reduced to a misdemeanor. The reduced charge was denied by judge Hector M. Guzman.

Voynov was suspended indefinitely by the NHL following the incident and his subsequent arrest, but did skate with the Kings on Dec. 2, which resulted in the team being fined $100,000 for allowing the suspended defenseman to take part in a team activity.

If convicted of the felony count of corporal injury to spouse with great bodily injury, Voynov could face a maximum of nine years in prison.
