Kraken Sign McCann to Five-Year Extension

The Seattle Kraken announced that they have signed Jared McCann to a five-year contract extension.

The Seattle Kraken made sure to lock up their leading scorer for the foreseeable future mere hours before taking on the team they managed to steal him from.

The Kraken made a sizeable announcement to kick off Tuesday morning, with the club coming to terms with forward Jared McCann on a five-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $5 million.

The deal, which ties McCann to Seattle through the 2026-27 season, kicks in at the start of next season and ensures that the 25-year-old will spend his RFA years under contract with the Kraken.

The details of the extension, such as salary structure and the inclusion of any trade protection, have yet to be revealed.

It's fitting, really, that the Kraken would announce this signing ahead of their first-ever game in Toronto, with Seattle having selected McCann from the Toronto Maple Leafs in the expansion draft this past summer.

McCann has found a home with the Kraken after bouncing around the league throughout his early career, going on to become one of the lone bright spots in a disappointing inaugural season for the NHL's newest franchise by racking up a team-leading 21 goals and 33 points in 50 games thus far.

Taking into account his age and positional versatility, this is an extremely important signing for a Kraken franchise trying to chart a successful course ahead. McCann's is the first extension given to an RFA in the team's history, going to lengths to showcase Seattle as a place that young players want to remain for their most productive years.

What the Kraken hope for here, clearly, is that McCann's outspoken willingness to commit long-term creates a domino effect throughout their prospects and future stars that will help the team retain talent for years.

It's a worthwhile gamble to make. And moving forward, the Kraken can now operate knowing that their leading scorer is under contract for the next half-decade.

That's not too shabby at all.
