Larry Robinson and Bob Gainey to have numbers retired this season

Larry Robinson and Bob Gainey will have their numbers retired this season by the Montreal Canadiens, the team announced Wednesday.

"Most of the things that happened in my career as a player happened as a dream," said Gainey, the team's GM. "Most of those things I had dreamed of - but not this one."

Robinson's ceremony will be Nov. 19 against the Ottawa Senators while Gainey will have his night Feb. 23 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Robinson mentioned many of his teammates from the great Canadiens teams of 1970s including fellow members of the Big Three of Serge Savard and Guy Lapointe.

"I was very honoured to play on some tremendous hockey teams, and I wouldn't be the player I was if I hadn't played with them," Robinson said at a news conference.

Last season the Habs retired the numbers of Ken Dryden, No. 29, and Serge Savard, No. 18, joining No. 1 Jacques Plante, No. 2 Doug Harvey, No. 4 Jean Beliveau, No. 5 Bernard (Boom Boom) Geoffrion, No. 7 Howie Morenz, No. 9 Maurice (Rocket) Richard, No. 10 Lafleur, No. 12 for Dickie Moore and Yvan Cournoyer and No. 16 Henri Richard.

The Canadiens, who had not retired a number since Plante's in 1995, began in 2005-06 with Geoffrion, Moore and Cournoyer in a round of annual jersey retirements leading up to the club's 100th anniversary in 2009.
