Las Vegas, Rose Bowl, Yankee Stadium possible outdoor game destinations

By Jordan Samery

Several news outlets are reporting the NHL is considering several new sites for next year's Outdoor Winter Classic Game. Among those sites are: The Las Vegas Strip, Yankee Stadium and The Rose Bowl.

“Logistically, it could happen,”said NHL CEO John Collins when referring to staging an outdoor game in Las Vegas. The last time the NHL played in Sin City was an exhibition matchup in 1991 between the Rangers and the Kings, which was played in 85-degree weather in front on some 13,000 fans in an outdoor rink at Ceasars Palace.

The NHL has also been rumored to be looking into having this year's NHL Awards Gala in Las Vegas.

No date has yet been announced for the game. The Winter Classic has been played the last two seasons on New Years Day to great fanfare in Buffalo and Chicago. However, an appointment with the Rose Bowl at least, would necessitate a change in what day the game is played. The first of January is the traditional day for college football to hold its Rose Bowl game, held in the same stadium. The Rose Bowl will also host college football's BCS National Championship game next year, played a week later.
