The hockey goal mouth is often called the "dirty" area or the "greasy" area. That's because it's not where pretty plays are made. Big, strong defenseman will do whatever they must - with their bodies, with their sticks - so goal scorers don't feel comfortable.
Knowing what's coming on a nightly basis, it takes courage to go in there anyway, like Beniers does here against the New Jersey Devils.
Valuable At Both Ends Of The Ice
Another piece of hockey jargon refers to the "200-foot game." A regulation rink is 200 feet from one end boards to the other. Forwards are prized who pay as much attention to the defensive half of the ice as the offensive half.
