Lokomotiv blanks Ak Bars 3-0 in Game 3 of KHL Gagarin Cup to take 2-1 series lead

Lokomotiv Yaroslavl defeated Ak Bars Kazan 3-0 Sunday to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven KHL Gagarin Cup final.

Lokomotiv, playing on their home ice at UKSK Arena 2000, wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. With the “Railway Men” on the power play, Marcus Nilson hammered a shot that had rebounded off the back boards past Ak Bars goalie Fredrik Norrena in the 4th minute to take the early lead.

After almost 30 minutes of scoreless action, Czech Zbynek Irgl converted another power play for Lokomotiv in the 33rd minute to put the hosts up 2-0. Less than seven minutes later, Johan Okerman deflected a puck past Norrena for Yaroslavl’s third and final goal of the day.

Game 4 of the KHL Gagarin Cup finals will be played tomorrow, Monday, April 6th in Yaroslavl.

The Gagarin Cup, the KHL's post-season tournament, named for famed Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, features 16 teams consisting of the KHL’s four division winners and 12 other teams with the best overall regular season records.

The first two rounds of the KHL’s Gagarin Cup are best-of-five, while the semifinals and final are best-of-seven series. Game 7 of the final, if necessary, will occur on April 12th, the anniversary of Gagarin’s mission into space.
