Lokomotiv Yaroslavl defeated Ak Bars Kazan 3-0 Thursday in the Tartarstan capital city to capture Game 1 of the best-of-seven KHL Gagarin Cup final.
After a scoreless, but chippy first period, Lokomotiv’s Zbynek Irgl broke through for the visiting team on a power-play goal in the 29th minute.
Three minutes later, Konstantin Rudenko padded Lokomotiv’s lead by slipping a goal past Ak Bars netminder Stanislaw Galimova.
Irgl lit the lamp again in the 38th minute with his second goal of the evening, providing Lokomotiv all the cushion they would need to secure the series opener.
The shutout was the third straight for Lokomotiv, as goalie Georgy Gelashvili extended his scoreless streak to 188 minutes.
The second game of the KHL Gagarin Cup final will be held Friday in Kazan.
