Metallurg beat Salavat Yulaev 2-1 in overtime, take 2-1 lead in KHL Eastern Conference final series

Metallurg scratched out a win at home Monday, defeating Salavat Yulaev Ufa 2-1 in overtime. Salavat Yulaev now leads the best-of-seven Kontinental League Eastern Conference final series, 2-1.

After a scoreless first period, the two teams swapped goals, with Metallurg’s Alexei Kaigorodov striking in the 24th minute and Salavat Yulaev’s Viktor Kozlov knotting the score line just two minutes later. Metallurg assumed a defensive approach for the third period, hoping for opportunities to present themselves on the counter-attack, but mustered only six shots during the period, while Salavat Yulaev put 14 shots on goal, all of which were turned away by Metallurg goaltender Georgy Gelashvili.

In spite of a very measured third period, Metallurg’s 19-year-old striker Pavel Zdunov beat Salavat Yulaev’s Erik Ersberg for the game-winning goal just three minutes into overtime.

The KHL Gagarin Cup playoffs continue Tuesday with the fourth game of the Altant vs. Lokomotiv Yaroslavl Western Conference final in Mytishchi. Atlant holds a 3-0 lead in that series. Salavat Yulaev and Metallurg return to action Wednesday, March 30th.
