Mika Pyorala lifts Flyers to 2-1 overtime win over Devils

PHILADELPHIA - Mika Pyorala spoiled Martin Brodeur's pre-season debut, beating the New Jersey star with a wrist shot at 1:45 of overtime to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 2-1 victory over the Devils on Thursday night.

Pyorala's goal came after New Jersey's Matt Halischuk slipped a rebound past Ray Emery to tie it 1-1 at 8:17 of the third period.

Emery, who signed a one-year free agent contract with Philadelphia in June, went the distance for the second straight game and made 31 saves as the Flyers sent the Devils to their first defeat.

The 36-year-old Brodeur, sidelined for 50 games last season following biceps tendon surgery, looked sharp in stopping 27 shots. He preserved the tie with 9.7 seconds left in regulation by snagging a close shot by James van Riemsdyk.

After returning last season, Brodeur won nine of his first 10 starts and became the NHL career victory leader with 557.

Carle put the Flyers ahead at 11:03 of the first period, converting a one-timer from high in the slot on a power play. New Jersey's Jamie Langenbrunner hit the post twice on consecutive shots late in the first period.
