Mike Modano looked like his vintage self.

Less than five seasons removed from his last NHL game, Modano’s trademark breakaway speed was intact Saturday and edge work was perfect. It appeared as though he was going to score the type of goal that helped make him a Hall of Famer.

Except, Jimmy Waite had the final say.

Modano, playing for the Minnesota North Stars/Minnesota Wild team in the pre-Stadium Series alumni game, was robbed of a sure goal by Waite.

Modano used his skating stride to catch up to a loose puck and was in alone on Waite, the goaltender for the Chicago Blackhawks oldtimers.

The 45-year-old former high-scoring center cut hard to his left and had a wide open net. But Waite reached back with his stick and denied Modano’s shot with his paddle.

Modano, the highest-scoring American-born player in NHL history with 561 goals and 1,374 points, had to settle for an empty-net marker in a 6-4 Minnesota victory.

The real game between the Wild and Blackhawks is scheduled for Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Central time.
